Obituary for Thurston "Bill" William Bohannan

Bill Bohannan, 69, of Coeur d’ Alene, Idaho passed away August 6, 2019 after a long battle with brain cancer. Bill was born on November 25, 1949 in Phoenix, Arizona to Vestal and Laura (Marr) Bohannan.

Bill lived with the love of his life Kathy Ropp, who survives him. Bill is also survived by his sister, Becky Sue Williams and husband Ralph of Arizona; son, Chris Bohannan and wife Laura of Idaho; daughter, Heidi Wolf and husband Steve of Washington; and son, Nick Bohannan and wife Heather of Washington; along with a host of grandchildren.

At the age of seven Bill began preaching the gospel. Preaching and staying active in local churches was very important to him. At the age of 19, Bill found himself in Vietnam and at the beginning of an Air Force career that would span more than a decade. He took advantage of his off time in the service to pursue an education, travel and pastor churches in both Europe and Asia. He started one church in Japan and two in England. His time in ministry lasted 40 years, during which he pastored 13 churches, establishing five of them himself. He also started three nonprofit organizations and served on the boards of several others. One of these nonprofit ministries touched the lives of thousands active duty military and their families. It received recognition from the military and President George H.W. Bush.

Bill’s love of God was matched only by the size of his heart. He gave everyone the benefit of the doubt and trusted beyond what he should. He touched the lives of multitudes and was known as dad, teacher, leader, or friend to tens of thousands. His love for Kathy was second only to his love for God. He brought Kathy’s family into the fold and united her two kids and grandson with his own three children and nine grandchildren.

After leaving ministry Bill fervently and relentlessly sought deeper spiritual understanding. When asked if he would ever consider a return to ministry he responded that he could do more good writing practical things for everyday people than he could repeating platitudes from the pulpit. Those that knew Bill on Facebook and in life can testify that he kept preaching until the end.

A Celebration of Life will be held starting at 2:00 PM on Saturday, August 24, 2019 at Yates Funeral Home – Hayden Chapel, 373 E. Hayden Ave., Hayden, ID 83835.

In lieu of flowers, the family is asking to donate to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, a charity close to Bill’s heart.
