Ray is survived by his wife, Beverly Garland; his children, John Garland, Steve Garland, and Cheryl Nankervis all of Seattle, Washington, Dan Henrikson of Cascade, Idaho, and Scott Henrikson of Rathdrum, Idaho; and many grand and great grandchildren.

Ray was born on November 27, 1922, in Butte, Montana. He had many jobs during high school, including working in the mines. During his involvement in the Civil Conservation Corp. at the Savenac Nursery in Haugen, Montana, he graduated from Clarks Fork High School in 1937. He returned to working in the mines after graduating.

After the war, he returned to working in the Butte mines. When the Korean War started, he returned to the Marine Corp., where he fought and was wounded at the Chosin Reservoir. Over the course of his military career, he earned many service metals including two purple hearts and a bronze star.
