Obituary for Kenneth Bert Harmon

Kenneth Bert Harmon peacefully passed away Thursday, August 29, 2019 in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho at the age of 76. Ken was born in Spokane, Washington to Harry and Frances Harmon on June 19, 1943. He graduated from West Valley High School (Class of ‘62) and attended Columbia Basin Junior College in Pasco, Washington.

His family life began with a marriage to Karen Ness and they had a daughter, Melinda. Ken and his wife, Joann Caruso, had three sons, Todd, Nick and Kyle. Ken heroically served his country during the Vietnam War and was honorably discharged, Sergeant Kenneth B. Harmon, in 1968. A decorated solider with two Purple Hearts, the Army Commendation Medal and other honors, he was a true patriot and loved his country.

Upon returning to civilian life, Ken resumed his 23-year career in retail management with Pay ‘N Save Drug Stores and lived primarily in the Seattle, Tri-Cities, Spokane and Coeur d’Alene areas. Ken also worked as a licensed realtor for Century 21, enjoyed knife sharpening for a mobile service, and started his own lawn and landscape business. In retirement, Ken and Linda spent 15 winters with family and friends enjoying the sunshine in Mesa, Arizona.

Ken loved the outdoors and enjoyed raising quarter horses and participating in team penning. He served as a past president of the Team Penning Association and was a member of the AQHA. While selling real estate, he won many awards for top producer. Camping with his kids was also a special time and helped to instill in them a love for the outdoors. His real passion was for bar-b-queuing – especially pork and Ken’s tomatoes were awesome! Anybody who ever tried Ken’s ribs or one of his “special” tomatoes knows! The annual end of summer rib fest was one we all looked forward to and it brought him great joy. While the tradition will continue, his presence and steady hand at the grill leaves big shoes to fill. His family meant the world to him and he will be deeply missed by all.

Ken was preceded in death by his brother, Steve Harmon. He is survived by his friend and loving companion of 28 years, Linda Williams of Coeur d’Alene; his daughter, Melinda Odegard (Cory); sons, Todd Harmon (Laura) and Nick Harmon (Alyssa), all of Spokane, and Kyle Harmon of Wenatchee; his sisters, Loretta Kreisel of Livermore, California, and Brenda Brancato (Vinnie) of Anthem, Arizona; his granddaughter, Jacinda; grandson, Clayton Kenneth; and great-granddaughter, Myla Rose; and many nieces and nephews.

While Ken – a dad, grandpa, great grandpa, brother, companion, and friend has left us – he will never be forgotten, we are all better for having known him. Until we meet again…

A memorial service will be held for Ken at 2:00 PM on Friday, September 13, 2019 at Yates Funeral Home - Coeur d' Alene Chapel, 744 N. 4th St. Coeur d' Alene, Idaho, 83814 with a reception to follow.
