Obituary for Herbert Nagel

On December 26, 2018, Herb Nagel, loving husband and dad passed away peacefully at the age of 87 with his family at his side.

Herb was born in Lind, WA, August 19, 1931 to John & Barbara Nagel. He was the youngest of 8 children. Hard times led the family to several areas before landing in Rathdrum, Idaho, where they farmed.

Herb was a scholar and a star athlete, playing football & basketball. When he was stricken with polio at age 15, he was told he would never walk again. He proved them wrong as he continued to be a top athlete.

He was proud to be Valedictorian of his graduating class. He worked in a coal mine while attending Law School & graduated with the highest grades in his class for which his parents were so proud. He kept his newspaper notice in his wallet until the day he left this world.

Herb was a respected attorney for over 60+years. He was the people's attorney working pro bono for those in need. He represented the City of Rathdrum along with several other small towns.

In 1958, he met Sandra Von Hosteen who would soon be the love of his life. They married in 1963 after a 6 year courtship; his life was finally complete. They built a house in Rathdrum, Idaho where together they lovingly raised 4 girls. He loved his family and they loved him. He was a true definition of husband, dad, & grandfather. An amazing provider, he created years of memories of vacations, horseback riding, snowmobiling, and so much laughter.

Herb loved sports of all kinds, but being a Coach was his favorite role. He & Sandi passed on their love of boxing & horse racing to the girls over the years,

Herb had a kind & generous heart & would give you the shirt off of his back. He made sure the Basketball & Football teams at Lakeland had uniforms. He always spent as much on holiday donations as he did on his family. He was a softie for kids & animals, especially horses.

It was in his nature to do nice things and not seek out recognition.

Herb is survived by his best friend and wife, Sandra Nagel, 4 daughters (Sorry Herb it’s another girl) Tami Cramer (Charles), Toni Kirsch (Jack), Traci Nagel & Triana Nagel. He was preceded in death by his Father, Mother, 7 siblings and his only grandson (Brock Cramer) who anxiously awaits their reunion. At his request there will be no Services. On-line registry and condolences may be found at www.yatesfuneralhomes.com.

Special thanks to Dr. Barbara Daugharty, Valerie Kastens, Shana May, Debbie Case, Michelle Kelly, Ephi with Hospice, and & others who provided care over the years.

In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Union Gospel, March of Dimes, or The Ranch/Altar Church.
